Target Corp. was scheduled to open its smallest store this week near the University of Minnesota campus. The 20,000-square-foot TargetExpress will carry about one-fifth the merchandise that a regular Target carries. The store will feature a new checkout lane geared towards high-volume traffic and smaller basket sizes.
When the company announced last January plans to open the store, it planned to carefully evaluate the new format to determine future growth. It also said the smaller box would be “an exciting opportunity to test and learn as we continue exploring new ways to meet our guests’ needs.”
The store, located near Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis, is on the ground floor of an apartment complex, and other retail space is available for lease. Approximately 85 percent of the store staff is college students.
