A sales tax initiative referred to as Moving Alachua Forward will be up for a vote in November. The initiative is a 1¢ sales tax for eight years in order to finance road projects. Part of the initiative includes an oversight panel consisting of seven members. Each of the seven chairs has a pre-specified criteria, and the Gainesville Chamber has just locked in one of those seats as their own in a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Susan Baird supported the effort by pointing out that the Chamber is a critical partner in this road project effort, and it would be a “disservice to the community” not to include them on the panel.
