Development at the Depot

Despite many setbacks, the development of Depot Park, a new park at the intersection of Depot Avenue and Main Street, is showing measurable progress. Occupied by the city’s historic Train Depot and the former site of the Gainesville Gas Company, the new park will help tie together the community and bring another point of interest to Gainesville’s expanding downtown.

Currently, storm water ponds are being added and wetland areas restored, after which construction on the main park is expected to begin. The overall vision for the park is multi-faceted, including a large area of conservation land, a promenade overlooking the ponds, an amphitheater and a football-field sized play area for children. The Train Depot building has undergone extensive renovations, and the new Cade Museum for Creativity and Innovation is another addition that is expected to be a big draw.

The project is being lead by the Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency, which took over development of the park in 2009. The park is now estimated to reach completion in 2016.
