Walmart will be testing a new shipping service that will now put them in competition with other major players in the online shopping industry. Walmart plans to offer an unlimited free shipping service for $50 per year. All shipping is guaranteed to be delivered in three days or less; however, Walmart will not be doing deliveries on Sundays. This puts Walmart in direct competition with the likes of Amazon Prime, which offers two day or less guaranteed delivery seven days a week for $99 per year.
The shipping service test will begin this summer and will be invitation only for the time being. Prior to the addition of this shipping service Walmart offered free shipping on online purchases of $50 or greater as well as the ability to pick up online purchases for free at brick-and-mortar locations. This is not the first step toward developing synergy between its physical stores and its online presence; a perfect example would be the online grocery delivery that is now offered in five separate markets.
