Good Things Come in Threes

What do Tampa Bay, Orlando and Las Vegas have in common? All three cities have major downtown development projects underway that aim to change the face of each respective city. The three projects bear striking resemblances to one another. They’re all being developed by well-known individuals: Jeff Vinik in Tampa, Craig Ustler in Orlando, and Tony Hsieh in Las Vegas. Each of these visionaries are trying to transform their respective downtowns from the tired, old urban centers they are into fresh and vibrant hubs. These developers have at least one thing in common: audacity. The projects they have taken on are massive, complex developments that have tremendous potential: for success and for failure. It will be interesting to see how these developments ultimately stack up to each other, but it’s nice to know that there are no losers in this competition. Even in the event of a giant flop, the fact someone is willing to bet heaps of money and years of time on any of these cities is proof positive real estate sentiment is in a great place.
