Hotels Facing Competition from Cheaper Alternative

Airbnb Inc. has encroached on the hospitality industry. Particularly when it comes to competitive pricing during events such as the Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, or the Pope’s recent visit to American cities. During these events because the hospitality demand is so high, hotels can charge expensive rates. Airbnb provides a more affordable option, that consumers may choose instead. According to trends, hotel vacancy has been declining steadily since 2009, but the premiums that hotels charge when they are nearly full has stayed roughly the same. Some hotels see Airbnb as competition and others merely see them as catering to a different consumer. Either way, Airbnb is stealing a little bit of the pricing power of hotels.

Virginia MacKoul

Virginia is a graduate from the University of Florida's College of Design Construction and Planning with a degree in Sustainability and the Built Environment, and a minor in Urban Regional Planning. Virginia joined the Front Street team in 2011, as an intern. Upon graduation, Virginia joined the Front Street team full-time as the Director of Client Services. Virginia was born in Boston and moved to Lee County, Florida in 1997. Virginia graduated her high school's International Baccalaureate program and started at the University of Florida with a focus on Architecture. Virginia shares Front Street's passion of giving back to the community and those in need. Virginia's hobbies include photography, cooking, football, movies, music, and spending time with her dog, Brinkley.
