Airbnb Inc. has encroached on the hospitality industry. Particularly when it comes to competitive pricing during events such as the Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, or the Pope’s recent visit to American cities. During these events because the hospitality demand is so high, hotels can charge expensive rates. Airbnb provides a more affordable option, that consumers may choose instead. According to trends, hotel vacancy has been declining steadily since 2009, but the premiums that hotels charge when they are nearly full has stayed roughly the same. Some hotels see Airbnb as competition and others merely see them as catering to a different consumer. Either way, Airbnb is stealing a little bit of the pricing power of hotels.
