With the advent of major online retailers such as Amazon and eBay, old fashioned brick and mortar stores have found themselves with stiff competition. To stave off their virtual foes, they attacked this holiday season aggressively through discounting and online merchandising.
Both Wal-Mart and Target had record breaking Thanksgiving sales, but these records weren't broken by these retailers doing the same old thing as last year. Wal-Mart has introduced a new pricing method, aimed at keeping prices more in line with Amazon. Target began offering deals on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and provided free shipping through December 20. These efforts have proved fruitful for the brick and mortar retailers, whose prices are now tracking much closer to their online counterparts.
