Back to school might not mean buying the trendiest clothes anymore. A large number of teens now place the importance of acquiring the latest technology and cell phones over the most stylish clothes.
Teen specific retailers, such as Hollister, American Eagle and Aeropostale, that once seemed ubiquitous, are struggling to maintain sales while post strong back to school numbers. As teens choose to make smaller and more frequent purchases, these companies also face competition from companies like Forever 21, which offer clothes at very low prices and keep up with the latest Instagram fads. The trend shows that cell phones, and not expensive clothing, are the new status symbols among teens.
