Federal Program Brings Businesses to Gainesville

Defense contractor ITC Defense Corp. has opened an office in Gainesville thanks to the assistance of the federal Small Business Administration’s HUBZone program. The HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zones) program helps small businesses in poor areas acquire federal contracts. To qualify, businesses must be in a county or Census tract that has a 25 percent poverty rate, have its principal office in a HUBZone, and have 35 percent of its employees reside within the HUBZone.

The firm decided to move to Gainesville to be close to the students of the University of Florida. The company mainly focuses on supplying software and systems engineering services to the Department of Defense. ITC Defense President Michael Cast hopes to get students interested in the defense industry.
