Agency Wants to Ban Map Apps on Smartphones in Vehicles

Whether it’s safe or not to use map apps on cell phones while driving has been the subject of lively debate over the past couple years. Phone apps offer a cheaper and more convenient option to expensive GPS systems. But are they just as dangerous as texting and driving? After all, distraction is distraction.

The dangers of texting and driving have spread across the nation and awareness for such behavior has been a top priority for safety advocates. The measure to ban cell phone use while driving, including looking at a map, has the support of automakers, most of whom already comply with voluntary guidelines for built-in navigation systems. There has been strong resistance and objection however from technology companies, which say that any such law would be impractical and impossible to enforce.

Virginia MacKoul

Virginia is a graduate from the University of Florida's College of Design Construction and Planning with a degree in Sustainability and the Built Environment, and a minor in Urban Regional Planning. Virginia graduated her high school's International Baccalaureate program and started at the University of Florida with a focus on Architecture.
