Getting inside criminal minds

Read Hayes, director of Loss Prevention Research Council, brings shoplifters into Gainesville stores. He accompanies shoplifters into the stores to assess the stores security measures. They talk about how they decide which stores to steal from, what to steal and the security measures they notice of the stores. His work involves researching theft and prevention measures. Hayes and his team interviews 20 offenders a week and bring into stores in Gainesville, North Florida, and Georgia to see what they notice. The offenders’ identities are kept confidential. Hayes main goal is to “get an idea of what cues these offenders pick up on.” His research has shown potential shoplifters are unlikely to shoplift with enhanced public view monitors in stores. His tools include cameras, signs, electronic tags, and trained employees. The LPRC opened an office in Innovation Square and is setting up a mock store for research purposes.  The council is working alongside the Gainesville Police Department to look into areas around a local big box store.
