Gainesville-area jobless rate dropped to 4.4 percent in April

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported a drop in unemployment in Gainesville. In the month of April, Gainesville’s unemployment rate dropped 0.7 points with 1,500 more people employed.  Florida created 34,000 new jobs with a 0.1 decrease in the unemployment rate.  The U.S. unemployment fell to 6.3 percent in April compared to the April 2013 unemployment rate of 7.5 percent.  Gainesville is now the second lowest unemployment rate in Florida in the month of April.

A different employer reports a growth of 1,900 jobs in Gainesville in 2014. This growth contains 1,100 jobs in education and health services, 600 in leisure and hospitality and 300 in retail trade. The employer survey also reported losses in the mining, logging and construction, information, and local government segments of the job market.
