SumTotal Systems names new CEO as former leader moves to Websense

Gainesville-based human resources software company SumTotal Systems has promoted Hardeep Gulati to chief executive officer, the company announced Wednesday.

Gulati became chief operating officer last year after joining SumTotal in 2011 as executive vice president of global products and customer service.

He replaces John Borgerding, who is moving to San Diego-based Websense as president and chief operating officer. Websense recently was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, which also owns SumTotal. Borgerding worked for Vista company Ventyx before coming to SumTotal in 2010.

SumTotal spokeswoman Wendy Verve said Borgerding was brought on to help integrate several companies acquired by SumTotal into the business and likely will serve a similar role at Websense. He will remain at SumTotal to help with the transition and will remain on its board of directors.

Gulati’s role is to grow the business around several product innovations he helped spearhead, she said.

SumTotal has nearly 1,000 employees worldwide, including 250 in Gainesville. The company provides human resources software to 3,500 companies -- including half of the Fortune 500 -- with 45 million employees in more than 150 countries.

The company acquired Gainesville-based MindSolve for its employee evaluation software in 2006 and relocated its headquarters from Mountain View, Calif., to Gainesville in 2010.

Before joining SumTotal, Gulati spent nearly 10 years at Oracle, most recently as vice president of product safety, according to a news release. He was founder and chief technology officer at eBizAutomation in New Jersey, which was acquired by SpinCircuit, where he became vice president of products. Before that, he was a senior consultant for Lucent Technologies and Dun & Bradstreet.

Gulati earned a master of business administration from the Wharton School of Business, a master’s in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, India, and a bachelor of science in computer science from the National Institute of Technology in Nagpur, India
